Under the direction and leadership of the Engineering Manager, we are seeking a permanent Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Engineering department. This position is responsible for responsible for providing specialized technical support and undertaking improvement projects for ATCO Power’s thermal fleet of generating stations. 
WHERE WE WORK AND LIVE
Battle River Generating Station is located about 20 kilometers south of Forestburg in East Central Alberta. ATCO Power is a major employer for people living in and around the area. The Battle River reservoir, conveniently located next to Big Knife Provincial Park, provides recreational opportunities including canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, bird-watching, camping and power boating.

Responsibilities

  • Developing proposals and business cases for capital improvements
  • Planning, designing and leading implementation of upgrades to electrical systems and components including generators, transformers and medium and low voltage equipment (motors, switchgear, MCCs and PDCs) as well as protective relays and station metering
  • Ensuring changes comply with applicable codes, regulations and ATCO standards
  • Managing the work of independent contractors during project implementation
  • Equipment condition monitoring, equipment life assessments, engineering analysis  and optimization of maintenance strategies
  • Providing technical leadership of projects including technology assessment, conceptual design, bid evaluation, and contract reviews
  • Influencing thermal station strategy in a changing environment
  • Provides specialized technical support and leadership in incident investigations and root cause analysis
  • Undertakes assigned electrical engineering or multi-discipline projects of significant complexity
  • Promotes and reinforces ATCO Power  health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures and culture

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registration and Practicing status as a Professional Engineer with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • 7 years related field experience at a power station or large industrial facility
  • Successful Project Management background in spearheading changes from conception to completion at an operational facility
  • Strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer focus and service.
  • Proficient with Microsoft programs, such as Word, Excel, and MS Project.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter with diverse and strong technical and analytical skills who is results focused and can manage effectively in a team environment.

  • Developing proposals and business cases for capital improvements
  • Planning, designing and leading implementation of upgrades to mechanical systems including high pressure piping, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, boilers and conveying systems
  • Ensuring changes comply with applicable codes, regulations and ATCO standards
  • Equipment condition monitoring, equipment life assessments, engineering analysis and optimization of maintenance strategies
  • Providing technical leadership of projects including technology assessment, conceptual design, bid evaluation, and contract reviews
  • Influencing thermal station strategy in a changing environment
  • Manages multi-discipline project teams to undertake complex projects  
  • Manages the work of independent contractors and or consultants during project implementation to ensure outcomes are consistent with contracted services
  • Guides and mentors power station management and staff in the application of engineering and maintenance practices, Supervises and performs Engineering and Project Management work that serve to meet technical and improvement activities defined in station business plans and budgets.
  • Promotes and reinforces ATCO Power Health Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and culture

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Registration and Practicing status as a Professional Engineer with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Minimum of seven (7) or more years’ related field experience at a power station or large industrial facility
  • 5 years with pressure equipment integrity and demonstrated competence with the ABSA Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation
  • Successful Project Management background in spearheading changes from conception to completion at an operational facility
  • Strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer focus and service.
  • Proficient with Microsoft programs, such as Word, Excel, and MS Project.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
