The Forestburg Historical Society operates the Forestburg and District Museum.  The building was constructed in 1927 and was the former Masonic Temple.  The building is now a registered historical resource and has been restored by the Forestburg Historical Society.  The museum contains many artifacts from the past.  Come in and learn about our early mining history, the hardships of the farmers over the past one hundred + years, and the brave young Canadians who left our community to join the armed forces to protect our country.  We also host special collections from time to time, please contact our museum manager for more information about upcoming shows.

DIPLOMAT MINE MUSEUM

8km S on Hwy 855 from Hwy 53

The Diplomat Mine Museum is located 8 km west of Forestburg on Highway 53 and then 8 km south on secondary highway 855.

The interpretive centre is home to the Marion 360, which was the world’s largest mobile land machine in 1927.  It is also home to the Bucyrus-Erie 120-B shovel which was used for loading coal.  Model coal cars, an observation deck to view Paintearth Mine and the Battle River Generating Station, as well as a gazebo are located on the site.  Ample free parking, picnic tables and restrooms are available for visitors’ use.

The annual open house is held the 3rd Sunday of June.  On that day the machines are opened for the public to view and guides are available to answer your questions.  Beef on a bun is served and souvenirs are available.

The Diplomat Mine Museum Society is looking for volunteers.  The members maintain the equipment on the site and host the annual open house each June.  The Annual General Meeting is usually the only meeting of the year.  If you would like to be part of this group, please contact one of the individuals listed above.
